Central Park is one of the most dynamic and culturally active parks in the nation. It of course is also one of the most famous. There are a great number of historical landmarks in the park that contribute to its significance and also the symbolic ambiance associated with it. In addition, there are numerous activities and events that take place there and more than one important historic figure is honored. William Shakespeare remains one of the world’s favorite and most well known poets and playwrights. It is only fitting that he is not only performed every summer but also honored and remembered in a beautiful garden that is named after him.

The Shakespeare Garden in Central Park is one of the beautiful nature oriented attractions and many people appreciate the beauty of the flowers and plant life as an essential part of their lifestyle harmonic and meditative elements. The garden is located on four acres of land and can be found on the west side between 79th and 80th streets. Many of the flowers and plants that are featured in the park were mentioned in one or more of the famous poet’s plays or poems. This creates a great experience for Shakespeare lovers as well as those who simply appreciate the beauty of nature. Beginning in 1987, a conservation effort was initiated to restore many of the flowers and adding benches and fences. For anyone visiting Central Park, this is definitely worth spending some time in and enjoying not only the associations to Shakespeare but also the beauty and peaceful atmosphere.

Every summer the Public Theatre produces a special Shakespeare in the Park series that presents two plays running in repertory at the park’s Delacorte Theatre. This is a time-honored event and the productions offer a certain amount of free tickets to the productions. It is a favorite among many of New York’s residents and is also a popular event for tourists to attend. This year’s productions will include The Winter’s Tale and The Merchant of Venice. The plays are directed by Michael Greif and Daniel Sullivan, respectively. Very often the plays are double casts and this is the case with this year’s productions. In addition, they frequently feature a performance by at least one star actor and this year’s standout name is Al Pacino, who himself is an acting legend. Pacino grew up in New York and was likely aware of these productions from the time they began. It is also very likely he was in the audience on more than one occasion.

Visitors to New York may want to stay in a Central Park hotel to be close to the Garden’s many attractions.
